Originally founded as Fort Des Moines, it was established to guard the Sac and Fox Indians against the Sioux Indians and white settlers that wanted to take possession of these hunting grounds. In 1843, soldiers were stationed at the Fort and began to build structures, such as a hospital and a storehouse. 

On October 10, 1845, a group of armed white men penetrated the Fort and were able to take it over from the Indians and their chief, Keokuk.  From this point on, many settlers came to this area to claim land. A governmental branch was established in 1852, and the city began to attract newcomers, business, and trade.  Eventually, Des Moines was named as the capital city of Iowa.
