Lancaster was the U.S. capital city for one day, September 27, 1777, and the capital of Pennsylvania from 1799 to 1812. A powerful force in the U.S. House of Representatives, Thaddeus Stevens, also lived and worked in Lancaster as an attorney.

Lancaster Sports

The Lancaster Barnstormers, the city’s Atlantic League of Professional Baseball team, attract thousands of local sports fans to their games at the Clipper Magazine Stadium. Local Professional Golf Association representative Jim Furyk won the 2003 U.S Open and placed 4th in the 1997, 1998, and 2006 British Open. The field at Lancaster Catholic High School hosts games for the AFC Lancaster Lions, the city’s United Premier Soccer League men’s team, and the Lancaster Inferno FC, the city’s United Women’s Soccer team.

Local Population 

Lancaster is a vibrant city with a wide variety of cultures and ethnic backgrounds represented. As of the 2010 census, the city was found to be 55.2% White, 16.3% African American, and 39.3% to be of Hispanic or Latino descent. In fact, 29.2% of Lancaster locals are of Puerto Rican ancestry, the second-highest concentration in Pennsylvania next to Reading.
