Weather and Climate

Local History 

Fairmont was created by merging the three smaller towns – Palatine, West Fairmont, and Barnesville – in 1913. Within ten years (1891-1901), Fairmont's population grew exponentially from 1,000 to 7,000 people. Railroads, such as the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad were built in the early 1900s and traveled through the city. As the leading center of the coal trade industry, Fairmont employed about 10,000 coal mine workers. Today, this city has a Council-manager government where the mayor serves as the city council's chairman. There are various historical landmarks in the area: the Fairmont Senior High School, Fairmont State University, and Pricketts Fort State Park.
