About Idaho

Idaho is the fourteenth largest state by area, with a population of 1,754,208 (U.S. Census Bureau, July 1, 2019). Idaho's heritage first began with the Native American tribes, including the Bannock, Coeur d'Alene, Nez Perce, and Shoshone tribes, who established the earliest settlements. Subsequently, European explorers arrived in 1805 with the Lewis and Clark expedition. It was not until July 3, 1890, that Idaho officially became part of the United States, under President Benjamin Harrison.

Today, Idaho is one of the largest U. S. producers of potatoes, in addition to trout, Austrian winter peas, and barley. Idaho is also known as "The Gem State" due to its abundance of rare minerals and precious gemstones, including the star garnet.

Idaho's economy has a GDP of $78 billion (Bureau of Economic Analysis, July 1, 2018), which is driven by manufacturing, health care, tourism, agriculture and food, and beverage processing industries. Many of the leading Fortune 500 companies have their headquarters in Idaho, including Albertsons, Micron Technology, and WinCo Foods, to name a few.
