After the purchase, Montana became apart of the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition were Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, with the help of Sacagawea, reached the Yellowstone River in 1805. Montana's early economy was dependent on the fur trade until gold was discovered in 1864, which sparked the gold rush and creation of many boomtowns like Bannock, Nevada City, and Virginia City.

Today, Montana's economy has a GDP of $49 billion (Bureau of Economic Analysis, July 1, 2018), which is driven by these top industries: real estate, government, health care, retail trade, and construction. Many of the leading companies have their headquarters in Montana, including St. Patrick Hospital & Health, Iinnii Initiative, and Glacier Bancorp Inc, to name a few.

The most recognized cities in Montana are Billings, Helena, and Bozeman.

Billings can be found in southern Montana and has a population of 109,082. Billings is home to the Pictograph Cave State Park, Moss Mansion Museum, and ZooMontana.
