How Did Bullhead City, AZ, Get its Name?

What we know today as Bullhead City was the site of a settlement called Hardyville, established in 1864. The community was founded by William Harrison Hardy of New York, an entrepreneur and politician. In 1942, Davis Dam was built in the area. Workers and their families lived at Davis Camp, at the foot of the dam. The community that grew from the camp was called Bullhead City after a rock island in the Colorado River that looked like the head of a bull with large horns. Eventually, the rock island was submerged, but Bullhead City thrived. It was incorporated as a city in August 1984.
