How Did Lumberton, NC, Get its Name?

The city was named after the Lumber River, which in turn got its name from the timber transported on the river in the late 1700s. Brig. Gen. John Willis, who fought in the Revolutionary War, founded Lumberton in 1787. It was named the seat of Robeson County that year. Willis represented the county in both the North Carolina Senate and State Convention that approved the Federal Constitution in 1789. Lumberton was incorporated in 1859.
