The Local History

The city got its name from the Broken Arrow tribe of the Muskogee Creek Nation, the area’s original settlers. Tribe members broke off (instead of cut) tree branches to make arrows, hence, their name. The town was established in 1903 in conjunction with the building of the Missouri, Kansas and Texas (MK&T) Railway from Muskogee to Tulsa. Broken Arrow relied on an agricultural economy, especially on corn, oats, and cotton.

Weather and Climate

It can be wet in Broken Arrow, but it gets little snow. The city receives about 42 inches of rain per year versus the U.S. average of 38 inches, and only five inches of snow compared with the national average of 28 inches. Tornadoes are common in Oklahoma, which is part of the Tornado Alley. On Aug. 6, 2017, an EF-2 tornado with winds up to 130 miles per hour struck Broken Arrow, Tulsa, and Oologah. It damaged homes, downed power poles and trees, and caused 26 injuries.

Oklahoma levies 0.5% to 5% in income tax depending on one’s earnings. The 5% top rate is among the lowest in the country. The state charges 4.5% to 11.5% in sales tax.
