Forbidden Caverns in Sevierville is one of the 8,350 caves in Tennessee, and perhaps the most spectacular. Forbidden Caverns include natural chimneys, several grottos, and a pristine stream. Most people who visit the Great Smoky Mountains National Park use Pigeon Forge as their base. Those who don’t want the hassle of big crowds can stay at Sevierville, 15 miles from the park. The Smokies consist of about half a million acres of wilderness. Clingmans Dome (6,643 feet tall) is the highest point in the park.

Local History

Sevierville was established and made the seat of Sevier County in 1795. The city and the county were named after John Sevier, a frontiersman, war hero, and politician who served under George Washington in the American Revolution. Sevier became the first governor of Tennessee upon its formation in 1796 until 1801, and again from 1803 to 1809. He later served as a state senator and as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives.

It used to be that people trying to get away from tourists in Pigeon Forge come to Sevierville. Today, some residents think Sevierville is fast becoming overdeveloped, causing increased traffic and congestion. More than half (52%) of all residents rent. The schools in Sevierville are as good as they come. You won’t find higher-ranked schools within the county, although Gatlinburg and Seymour might have fewer tourists.

The blizzard in Sevier County and eastern Tennessee on March 12, 1993, was an exception. The snowstorm dumped 15 inches to 60 inches of snow across the region.
