Getting Around in Tuscaloosa 

Tuscaloosa is located off I-20/59, which is only a 35-minute drive from the Birmingham International Airport. There are various transportation modes to include Amtrak’s Crescent line, which offers a 59-minute train ride from Birmingham to Tuscaloosa, the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport Shuttle, and rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft. The Tuscaloosa Transit Authority (TTA) is a government-owned bus system that serves this city. They operate busses and trolleys across the town. The Tuscaloosa Regional Airport is a general aviation airport used for airfreight and private air traffic.  

Local History 

Tuscaloosa was the state capital from 1826-1846 and was named after the Mabila, a Mississippian town. In 1881 the University of Alabama was established in this city. This city is a central hub for West Alabama industries and commerce. Tuscaloosa began to attract large manufacturing firms such as Michelin, JVC, and Mercedes Benz in the late 1900s. There are many museums and historic cultural sites that tell the story of Tuscaloosa's past. In 2019 a Civil Rights Trail was unveiled. It includes a walking trail with 18 locations related to the civil rights movement in the city.
