Many types of architectural styled homes are found in San Diego, but only four are considered historical styles. In the 1840s, large and elegant Victorian-style houses were built. By the late 1800s, the Craftsman style home was introduced. These more compact houses were artsy with thick trim, intricate woodwork, and large pillars on the front porch. 

Deep-rooted in San Diego architecture is the Spanish style home that is still being built throughout the city. With terracotta tile roofs, beautiful stucco walls, and distinctly rounded archways, this style is representative of Spain. More modern mid-century homes were built in the 1950s, having simple layouts and boxy frames.  

Home prices average $640,000, increasing by 1.6% since last year. Although 57% of residents own their homes, renting is becoming more popular year after year. The average monthly rent for an apartment in this city is $2,146 a month.  

A Flourishing Job Market 

The four top industries in San Diego are Defense/Military, Tourism, Research/Manufacturing, and International Trade. There are two Fortune 500 companies with headquarters in the city: Sempra (No. 280), an energy company, and Qualcomm (No. 119), a chip manufacturer. 

The top employers in San Diego are the University of California (26,000 employees), the County of San Diego (20,500 employees), and the United States Navy (20,000 employees). Other private companies that employ a large number of residents are Sharp Health Care, Qualcomm Inc., and Scripps Health. 

Employees earn an average salary of $75,000 a year or $20.42 an hour. As of March 2020, the unemployment rate was 4%.  

Getting Around in San Diego 

San Diego offers residents and tourists several modes of economical and eco-friendly public transportation. In addition to the typical local bus, you can travel via trains, trolley, pedicabs, and waterfront shuttles. The trolley will take you around downtown San Diego.  

To travel to nearby cities, you can take a relaxing train ride. The waterfront shuttle has eight stops along the San Diego Bayfront. The San Diego International Airport offers easy access to and from the city, and the Tijuana International Airport is just 16.3 miles away. 

For such a big city, San Diego has one of the best commute times in the country, averaging a 24.1-minute commute to work and about 30 minutes for commuters to access the city.  

The Local Sports Scene 

This city has one major professional sports team, the San Diego Padres (Major League Baseball). You can watch them play at Petco Park, which has a capacity of 40,209 people. Other top-level professional teams are the Sockers (Soccer League) and the Seals (Lacrosse League). 

Minor League professional teams are the Gulls (Hockey) that play in the Pechanga Arena, and the Indoor Football League team is called the Strike Force. Collegiate sports include the San Diego State Aztecs that play in the NCAA Division I.

San Diego has won only one major league title: the 1963 American Football League Championship won by the Chargers. Some local fans believe there is a "curse" on the major league teams in the city as San Diego is the only large US city not to have won a Super Bowl, World Series, Stanley Cup or NBA Finals.
