California’s oldest university, the University of the Pacific, moved from San Jose to Stockton in 1924 and has been located in the city ever since. Stockton History

California’s Gold Rush in the mid 19th century drew huge amounts of new residents to the state, so it’s no surprise that the city of Stockton was originally built around this time. Located near the coast of the Pacific Ocean, Stockton’s seaport has historically served as an entrance into California’s central valley for trade as well as commercial travel. 

Local Culture

Stockton is home to California’s third oldest professionally performing orchestra, the Stockton Symphony. The city’s colleges also contribute greatly to its arts scene with a high-performing music conservatory at the University of the Pacific and a thriving jazz program at San Joaquin Delta College. Stockton supports a lively visual arts scene as well with such local museums as Haggin Museum, the San Joaquin County Historical Society and Museum, and the Children’s Museum of Stockton

Stockton Climate

Like most of California’s coastal cities, Stockton doesn’t receive any snow in a typical year and sees upwards of 250 days of sun and clear skies. Winters are relatively mild with a January low of 38 degrees, but Stockton summers can be scorching at an average high of 93 degrees in July. 

Local Sports

Stockton features teams in three minor league sports franchises: the Stockton Heat in ice hockey, the Stockton Kings in basketball, and the Stockton Ports in baseball. The city is home to several major arenas for sporting events with seating ranges up to the tens of thousands including Banner Island Ballpark and Stockton Arena.
