The first Spanish settlement within the continental U.S. took place in Pensacola in 1559. Pensacola was ceded from the Spanish to the British in 1763 during exchanges of power after the French and Indian War, and the city didn’t officially become a part of the United States until 1821, with former president Andrew Jackson as its provisional governor.
