Local History 

Athens, GA was established in 1805 however, Athens-Clark County dates back to the US's very beginnings. In 1875, the University of Georgia was founded. This city has experienced several wars, followed by times of reconstruction and then times of peace. In 1990, the City of Athens and Clarke County unified their governments, becoming the second consolidated government in Georgia. Rich in heritage, you will find 40 nationally registered sites and 16 districts on the Register of Historic Places. There are also 41 local historic landmarks in Athens-Clarke County. Athens has continued to hold its reputation for being a place of higher learning in the state of Georgia.
