There are four colleges and universities in the Lexington area that are mostly private 4-year institutions. The closest are the University of Kentucky, the American National University-Lexington, ITT Technical Institute-Lexington, and Transylvania University. The Bluegrass Community and Technical College is a 2-year local college that is 2.7 miles from downtown Lexington.  

The Local Sports Scene 

The primary sport in Lexington is horse racing. There are many equestrian events throughout the year at Keeneland and The Red Mile, two horseracing tracks. The world's largest Thoroughbred horse auction is held in this city every year. The Blue Grass Stakes is the most important race as it prepares competitors for the world-famous Kentucky Derby. 

The University of Kentucky’s football and basketball teams are known nationwide. The Kentucky Wildcats is the most popular sports entity in Lexington, KY.  With eight national championships, the men's basketball team is one of the most successful programs in NCAA history. The Transylvania University Pioneers is another NCAA Division III team in the city. 

You can watch the Lexington Legends, a Class A-minor league team, play baseball at the Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
