Local History

Edison was originally called “Raritan Township” due to its heavy population of Raritan Native Americans of the Lenape peoples. The city’s eventual namesake didn’t arrive in the area until 1876 when Edison built his home and laboratory for research in an area known as Menlo Park, eventually earning himself the nickname “the Wizard of Menlo Park.”
