This site was initially inhabited by the Delaware Indians until 1660 when a permanent settlement was established. During the American Revolution, the British held onto this city as it was in a strategic location at the Hudson River's mouth. Afterward, this town became an important transportation center. Docks, railroads, and tunnels were constructed to connect the city to lower Manhattan Island and New York. 

New Jersey has become a highly industrialized community, manufacturing just about anything from chemicals, containers, electrical equipment, cosmetics, plastics, candy, pharmaceuticals, auto parts, and paper products. Today, Jersey City hosts towering skyscrapers, beautiful museums, plenty of delicious restaurants, and the US's largest planetarium.  

Getting Around Jersey City

Jersey City offers numerous forms of public transportation services to its residents. PATH is a subway station that provides daily service to the Wall Street area and nearby cities. Ferry services run between Newport and Manhattan seven days a week. The Light Rail Service runs throughout New Jersey and connects passengers to PATH stations and bus lines. The NJ Transit System provides access to Penn Station and various communities throughout the state.  The state of New Jersey has one principal airport, Newark Liberty International Airport. It’s only a 20-minute drive from Jersey City.  

Things to Do in Jersey City

Jersey City has a lot of history, and it can be seen and felt as you walk along the streets lined with museums and monuments honoring its past. Some interesting places for a glimpse into the past include the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration, the Statue of Liberty National Monument, Liberty State Park, and the Katyn Memorial. For a pleasant stroll or a day outside, you can kick back on the lawns of Lincoln Park, or you can wander the boardwalks of the J. Owen Grundy Park. If you want to sit down and have a drink and something to eat, head over to the Light Horse Tavern, Grove Square, or dine on the edge of the Hudson at Battello. Hoboken is a top destination for dancing and nightlife.  

The Local Sports Scene

New Jersey has three Major League sports teams: the New Jersey Devils (NHL), the Metropolitan Riveters (Women’s NHL), and the Sky-Blue FC (Women's Soccer). Together, they have brought home five titles. There are also three additional professional sports teams from the New York Metropolitan area that play in New Jersey. These are the New York Jets (NFL), the New York Giants (NFL), and the New York Red Bulls (MLS).

In college sports, the Saint Peter’s University Peacocks and Peahens, located in Jersey City, compete in Division I. Jersey City is home to a plethora of famous professional athletes such as John Valentin (MLB), Henry Wittenberg (Olympic Gold Medalist form Wrestling), Jim Spanarkel (NBA), and Jose Rosado (MLB).
