Local History

Before European settlers came to the Newark region, several cultures of indigenous peoples lived along the Ohio river valleys. In fact, people of the Hopewell culture built several mounds and enclosures out of the soil, creating a large earthwork complex dubbed the Newark Earthworks and designated as a National Historic Landmark. These structures have been extensively studied by archaeologists and demonstrate a high level of scientific understanding among the Hopewell people.

Newark is considered to be a part of the larger metropolitan area of Columbus, Ohio. As of the 2010 census, the city is home to 47,573 residents and has a population density of 2,278.4 people per square mile. Of Newark’s 19,840 households, 30.8% have children under the age of 18 and 40.7% are married couples living together. The majority of Newark residents fall between the ages of 45 to 64 at 26%, with the age group of 25-44 falling close behind at 25.6%.

Newark sees around 128 days of precipitation per year with around 42 inches of rain and around 20 inches of snow. Locals say that June, August, and September are Newark’s most pleasant months while January and February are the coldest.
