Reed College is a small liberal arts institution in Portland that offers both bachelor’s and master’s degree programs. The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, OR, about a two-hour drive from Portland. It has been ranked #104 in the 2020 edition of Best Colleges and National Universities.

The Local History 

Known as "Stump Town" due to the large number of trees in the area, Portland is a combination of nature and city living. This town was established after its discovery by the Lewis and Clark expedition. Travelers from the Oregon Trail quickly inhabited the region. In the 19th Century, the city became a popular and accessible port. 

In the 1940s, a Waterfront was developed, causing an economic boom. The population grew during this time, and many wealthy investors began to invest in the city’s infrastructure. In the 1990s, a cultural industry began to emerge, attracting artists and creative mindsets. 

Today, Portland is a haven for young and up-coming artists, foodies, and musicians with a “Keep It Weird” philosophy.

For a walk in the park or a hike in the woods, make your way to Forest Park or the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. 

The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry includes a planetarium, a theatre, a US Navy submarine, and many hands-on/interactive displays for people of all ages.  

Powell's City of Books is a legendary bookstore that carries over 1 million books. Events happening in the bookstore include author readings, writing workshops, and panel discussions. Many book clubs also gather here to share reading experiences.
