Local History

Anderson, named for Revolutionary War veteran Robert Anderson, was officially incorporated as a city in 1828. One of Anderson’s nicknames is “The Electric City” due to the fact that it became one of the Southeast’s first cities to use electricity in 1895 with the building of a hydroelectric plant nearby. Anderson was also the world’s first city to utilize electricity to power the cotton gin.

Anderson University is one of the biggest points of pride for the city, a private university established in 1911 that offers a variety of degree levels in over 70 disciplines. Between the years 2006 and 2016, Anderson University was known as the country’s 19th fastest expanding private master’s university. 

Transportation and Infrastructure

Anderson locals can easily access air travel at the Anderson County Regional Airport, located 3 miles away from the city center. I-85 travels directly through Anderson and serves as the city’s only major freeway. Residents that need public transit utilize Anderson’s four distinct bus routes that travel throughout the city and run each hour, and those in need of inter-city travel can catch a Greyhound bus at the West Whitner Street station.
