Getting Around the City

Charleston residents utilize the Charleston International airport for commercial air travel, located about 12 miles northwest of downtown. Locals can also travel by railroad on the Palmetto and Silver Meteor, two Amtrak trains running from the station near downtown Charleston. Residents get around the city using several major highways including Interstate 26, U.S. Route 17, and State Highway 7. The Port of Charleston mostly handles freight ships but also houses a cruise ship passenger terminal. 

Local Culture

The Spoleto Festival is hosted annually in Charleston, a 17-day festival featuring over 100 musical and artistic performances in a variety of styles and disciplines. Other annual festivals include the Charleston Marathon, the Lowcountry Oyster Festival, and the Taste of Charleston. Charleston was listed as one of the country’s top 10 cities for theatre in 2010, and some of the city’s premier theatres include the Dock Street Theatre and the Sottile Theater.

Charleston’s Demographics

Charleston enjoys a vibrant mix of cultures as well as a distinctive Charleston accent that can be easily distinguished from other Southern dialects. The city’s racial makeup as of the 2010 census was 70.2% White, 25.4% African American, 2.9% Hispanic or Latino, and 1.6% Asian American. As of 2018, the median household income in Charleston was $61,028 per year. Additionally, the number of households in the city between 2014 and 2018 was around 156,482 and the average household size was 2.45 people. 

Schools and Higher Education

Most of the city is served by the Charleston County School District, but some of it is served by the Berkeley County School District, particularly to the north. In addition to a wide variety of public elementary, middle, and high schools, Charleston is home to many independent schools including Porter-Gaud School, Charleston Collegiate School, and Ashley Hall, all of which are K-12. Some of the city’s institutions of higher education are the College of Charleston, The Military College of South Carolina, and the Medical University of South Carolina. 

Local Sports

Charleston is the proud home of several professional, amateur, and minor league sports teams. Some of these include The Charleston Battery, a professional soccer team; the South Carolina Stingrays, a professional hockey team; and the Charleston RiverDogs, a minor league baseball team.
