Local History

The city of Florence originally served primarily as a railroad stop, with residents supporting themselves by farming indigo and cotton. During the Civil War, Florence became an important stop for supplies and railroad repair. After the war and into the 20th century, the economy of Florence grew to support multiple types of production and manufacturing, all based around its position along the railroad.  

Infrastructure and Transportation

Local airport Florence Regional Airport is the second busiest in the region next to Myrtle Beach International Airport. Public transit is handled locally by the Pee Dee Regional Transportation Authority, which also runs public transit lines in other local cities including regular bus service and express shuttles. Residents traveling around the city typically use highways I-95, I-20, U.S. 52, U.S. 76, and U.S. 301.
