The Local Culture 

South Dakota has a diverse background and is a huge melting pot of different cultures and heritages. The annual Dalesburg Midsummer Festival in Vermillion celebrates Scandinavian roots. A traditional dish known as Lutefisk, consisting of a cured and jellied fish, is eaten during the holidays. Instead of celebrating Columbus Day, this state pays homage to those who were here long before him: the Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota people who called SoDak home.  The Vietnamese Lunar New Year, called Tết, is celebrated yearly with live music, sword fights, puppet shows, and much more. Even the Danish have left their mark via a cultural tradition known as Aelbleskiver, which includes a Danish pastry that is often enjoyed with the family at breakfast.
