A Rich Local History

In the 18th century, the Lakota and Dakota tribes used the area to rendezvous with French fur trappers. The falls drew many explorers, but the first documented visit was made by Philander Prescott, a trader and trapper, who came in December 1832. In 1876, the Village of Sioux Falls, consisting of 1,200 acres of land, was incorporated. Sioux Falls became a city in 1883. The arrival of the railroads in the 1880s paved the way for the city’s rapid growth.
