Interstate Highway 66 will take you from the northwest side of the town through the upper east side towards Washington, DC, and I-395 runs parallel to 1-66, but on the southern side of the city. State Route 120 will take you north and south right through the middle of Arlington.

Even the cuisine here has its own traditions. With a very Southern taste, Virginia is unique in that the Smithfield ham is protected by law and cannot be produced anywhere in the US except in the town of Smithfield. Other unique dishes are the Shoofly pie, Marble cake, and Fried Peaches. Brunswick stew is a very traditional dish, and Virginia Wine is made in certain parts of the state.

Things to Do Around Arlington 

Arlington is a historical city, and it has many monuments and memorials to commemorate America’s past. At the George Washington Memorial Parkway and Hemicycle, you can browse an extensive collection of meaningful monuments. Built in 1932, the Arlington Memorial Bridge across the Potomac River symbolizes the reconnection of the north and south. 

Another national memorial to visit is the Theodore Roosevelt Island Park on an 88.5-acre island on the Potomac River. This park features a 17-foot-tall statue of the 26th president and has various hiking trails and boardwalks throughout the island. 

The Ocean Dunes Water Park is a fun family attraction to visit during the warm season. Bike riders can go on a self-guided tour of the city on the 23-mile W&OD Railroad Trail that has 12 stops to learn about the history of Arlington. 

When looking for a place to eat, visit Tupelo Honey, an American style restaurant inspired by the south. Farmers from all over the state of Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey make their way to the famous Arlington’s Farmers Market that happens every Saturday of the year.
