Established in 1946, Newport News merged with Warwick in 1958 to form a larger and more prosperous city.  During WWI, the city was established as a port of embarkation, and five military camps were set up. The War Shipping Board constructed about 500 homes to house the surge of shipyard families who came to the area. During WWII, another major influx of residents came to the city, growing an astounding 77.2%. 

Schools and Higher Education 

The Newport News Public School (NNPS) division educates 28,680 students in 42 schools in the Newport News area. There are five early childhood centers, 24 elementary schools, seven middle schools, five high schools, and one middle/high combination school. The graduation rate of 93.9% is high, and the drop-out rate has steadily been reducing year after year, with it being 1.9% in 2020. There are 102 private schools in this city as well. 

Students who want to attend college close to Newport News have a variety of schools to choose from, including Old Dominion University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and James Madison University.  

Things to Do in Town

This town is full of history, and it’s displayed via many different avenues. Visit the Virginia Living Museum, the Virginia War Museum, the US Army Transportation Museum, The Mariner's Museum, and The Mariners' Museum Park to get a first-hand look at this history. You can also tour the Endview Plantation, James A. Fields House, the Lee Hall Mansion and the Civil War battlefields, and 1862 Peninsula Campaign sites.  

For family fun, you can check out the Peninsula Fine Arts Center, The Newsome House Museum & Cultural Center, and the Peninsula SPCA & Petting Zoo. The Chincoteague Blueberry Festival is held annually in July and is the largest fine arts & crafts event on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Newport News is 9 meters above sea level, and the climate is warm and temperate. Summers are mild, with the highest temperature averaging 89º high. Winters are cold, and temperatures average 33º lows. The city of Newport News receives an average of 46 inches of rain per year and 5 inches of snow. Being a coastal city, the humidity levels are high for most of the year.
