Local History

Newnan was a prosperous city at the turn of the century mainly due to the cotton industry. The wealthiest citizens brought the railroad to Newnan in the mid-1800s, which helped further establish their prosperity and made them one of the wealthiest towns in the United States at the time. The city served as a hospital for both Confederate and Union soldiers during the Civil War, which helped them avoid damage and destruction from the war. 

Newnan is named after General Daniel Newnan, who was a soldier in the Patriot Army. He later went on to become Georgia’s Secretary of State and served one term as a United States Congressman from 1831-1833.
