Beaumont is a city in southeast Texas, 85 miles east of Houston, and is the county seat of Jefferson County. It has a population of approximately 118,000, with a median age of 33.9 years old. Beaumont was named after Mary Dewburleigh Barlace Warren Beaumont, who was the wife of a businessman who created many jobs in the city in the 1800s.

History of Beaumont, TX

 Bobby and Nancy Tevis arrived in Beaumont in 1824 and started a farm near the Neches River. The town began to grow around this farm and eventually became a town on December 16, 1838. At the time, the local economy was based on lumber, farming, and port industries.

Beaumont became an important place to help with lumber shipment throughout the country during the lumber boom of the 19th century, which helped rebuild railroad tracks after the Civil War.  

Oil was discovered in Beaumont in 1901. The Lucas Gusher on Spindletop Hill exploded and shot oil into the air. Oil continued to gush from the oil column for nine days and produced around 100,000 barrels of oil a day. After this, dozens of oil companies were created.

Beaumont has hot summers and mild winters. July’s average high is 92ºF, and January’s low is 41ºF. The city does not receive any snow but does receive a lot of rain, 60 inches on average. The wet season is from April to October, while the winter months are mainly dry. Hurricanes are a problem to beware of in Beaumont. Hurricanes Rita, Ike, Harvey, and Imelda all hit the city and caused severe damage and flooding throughout the city.
