Yakima is the county seat of Yakima, WA. The city is located about 60 miles southeast of Mount Rainer in an agricultural region that produces 77% of all hops grown in the United States.   

Weather and Climate

Yakima is a fairly dry area compared to the rest of Washington. It only receives about 9 inches of rainfall a year, which is less than the average of 38 inches per year. The hottest month is July, where the average temperature is 88ºF. The coldest month is December, where the nighttime low temperature is about 23ºF which is much colder than other parts of Washington. Yakima also gets a lot more snow than other cities in Washington and averages about 18 inches per year.  

Local History

Yakima, WA was initially built along the Northern Pacific Railway Line about 125 years ago. It has always been a leading agricultural area in Washington producing apples, pears, peaches, and other fruits.  

Nobody is sure where the name “Yakima” came from. There are theories that it comes from the native word for “black bear.” Another idea is that it is the name of an Indian chief’s daughter who broke the rules of her tribe and fled from her home, and settled in what is now the city’s location.

There are three K-12 school districts in Yakima that are on par with the state averages. Yakima has several private schools to choose from as well. Yakima Valley College, one of the most comprehensive community colleges in the country, is in Yakima, as is the Pacific Northwest University of Health Services. The university’s mission is to train primary-care physicians who will eventually commit to practicing medicine in rural and underserved populations and areas in the Pacific Northwest. 

What Makes Yakima, WA Unique?

Since Yakima produces such large quantities of hops and wine, it makes sense that there are dozens of breweries and wineries to visit. In fact, the Yakima Valley is referred to as Washington’s wine country with over 120 wineries. There are numerous tour companies that will drive you and your friends around to the various wineries for a day of tasting. There are also seasonal events that center around wine tasting and food pairings. If wine isn’t your thing, Yakima is also referred to as “hops country” due to its large hops production. You can visit one of the many breweries in town as part of the Hop Country craft beer trail.
