Local History

Chandler was named after Dr. Alexander John Chandler, the first veterinary surgeon in Arizona territory. In 1891, he bought 80 acres of land in the area, an arid desert. He was instrumental in building an early system of canals. By 1900, Dr. Chandler’s property has expanded into an 18,000-acre ranch. The doctor is credited for bringing ostriches to Arizona after he saw them at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. By 1905, Chandler owned a large herd of ostriches, spurring other ranchers to try ostrich farming.

Ostriches have been a part of the local landscape since the 1900s when ostrich farming first took off in Chandler. The annual Ostrich Festival celebrates the large birds through live entertainment, carnival, fabulous food, arts and crafts, and ostrich-themed activities. The Chandler Chamber of Commerce introduced the family-friendly festival in 1988.
