Yes. William J. Murphy, a former Union Army officer, founded Peoria for its potential in agriculture. Murphy worked as head of construction on the Arizona Canal, which was completed in 1885. The following year, he recruited four families from Peoria, Illinois, to move to the area. Residents named the new settlement after their original hometown in a filing of the plat map in March 1897. Peoria was incorporated in 1954.
