It was founded by Methodist ministers in 1851 in Santa Clara. The university moved to Stockton in 1924, and it remains the only Methodist-affiliated university in California. There are 26 other colleges and universities within 50 miles of the city. In primary and secondary education, Stockton has 110 public schools serving 68,821 students.
