Local History

Carroll County was founded in 1826. Both the county and the city were named in honor of Charles Carroll III (also known as Charles Carroll of Carrollton) of Maryland who was the last living signer of the Declaration of Independence at the time of the county’s establishment. Carrollton was incorporated in December 1829. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Carrollton was one of Georgia’s leading cotton producers and an important center for the collection and shipment of cotton.

Schools and Higher Education

The University of West Georgia (13,733 students) and West Georgia Technical College (7,184 students) are located in Carrollton. UWG is a public, four-year university founded in 1906. It offers more than 85 academic programs. Carrollton’s public schools have an average math proficiency score of 46% versus the Georgia public school average of 42%.

Carrollton’s cost of living rate is 0.4% lower than the national average. However, food and housing costs are 3.5% and 4.1% higher than the national average respectively. Overall, it’s still fairly affordable, with the median gross rent at $845. Carrollton has a population of 27,259. Adamson Square in downtown Carrollton is a popular place to hang out. It’s a walkable area with a combination of historical and modern architecture. You’ll find fantastic restaurants, unique shops, and locally owned galleries in the area. Visit the Southeastern Quilt and Textile Museum to learn about the region’s craft and quilting heritage. You can view the exhibits and even take art lessons. The museum has more than 150 quilts, three galleries, a gift shop, and a library.

Georgia as a whole is vulnerable to tropical storms due to the moist air from the Gulf of Mexico. On Sept. 21, 2009, up to a foot of rain fell in parts of Georgia, causing flooding in 23 counties including Carroll County, and affecting Carrollton. The flood washed away some roads and bridges. Carrollton receives about 52 inches of rain per year versus the national average of 38 inches, and only one inch of snow annually.
