Local History

After the Cherokee Removal in 1838-1839, settlers arrived in the area in anticipation of the construction of the Western and Atlantic Railroad. The town was named after Col. Farish Carter, a wealthy Georgia planter. Cartersville was incorporated in 1850. During the Civil War, areas surrounding Cartersville were devastated by Union Gen. William T. Sherman’s “March to the Sea” military campaign. Nearby Cassville, the original seat of Bartow County, was also destroyed. Cartersville became the new county seat in 1867. Cartersville’s economy relied heavily on cotton until 1917 when cotton production dropped due to boll weevil infestation.
