Lawrenceville, incorporated on Dec. 15, 1821, was named after James Lawrence, naval commander of the frigate Chesapeake and a hero of the War of 1812. Lawrenceville first thrived as a cotton farming town. The Lawrenceville Manufacturing Co. was one of the state’s first cotton factories. When boll weevils devastated cotton crops, dairy farming flourished in Lawrenceville. The arrival of the railroad made it a transportation hub in the late 1800s. Atlanta’s rapid growth led to Lawrenceville’s transformation into a suburb.
