Local History

The city was originally called Valley Junction for its location at the junction of several railroad lines. Incorporated in October 1893, Valley Junction was home to the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad's switching facilities. The area’s early economy relied on its role as a shipping hub. With the decline of the railroad industry and the Great Depression, the city changed its name to West Des Moines in January 1938. It embraced suburban development as a path to continued progress.
