Local History

Evansville was originally called McGary's Landing after Hugh McGary Jr., who bought about 441 acres of land in the area. He renamed it Evansville in honor of Col. Robert Morgan Evans, who fought in the War of 1812. Evansville was incorporated in 1819. Its location along the Ohio River helped fuel its economic growth.
