The Howard Steamboat Museum, a Victorian mansion with 22 rooms and beautiful stained-glass windows, celebrates Jeffersonville’s heritage as a steamboat-building town. The museum stands across from the shipyard founded by James Howard, which was the largest inland shipyard in America at one point and built over 3,000 vessels. The museum features artifacts and models of famous boats built in the Howard Shipyard. 

Local History

Jeffersonville was established on land once occupied by Fort Steuben. The city was named after President Thomas Jefferson because it was laid out in 1802 using a grid pattern designed by Jefferson. Jeffersonville became the seat of Clark County in 1802. It briefly served as the capital of the Indiana Territory. The city grew in the 19th century as a steamboat-building center.

The city’s location along a river makes it susceptible to flooding. During the Ohio River Great Flood on Jan. 13-25, 1937, 90% of Jeffersonville and 70% of nearby Louisville, Kentucky, were submerged.
