The Local History

In the 1860s, Osage Native Americans lived mostly west of the Verdigris River while white settlers stayed on the east side. James A. Coffey set up a trading post on the west side of the river, sparing the Native Americans from crossing the river to trade elsewhere. Coffey’s trading post and the area around it thrived and became Coffeyville in 1869. It was incorporated in March 1873. 

The city became famous in 1892 when the murderous Dalton Gang robbed two banks simultaneously in Coffeyville. The townspeople surrounded the banks and fought the gang in a gun battle, killing every member except for one.

Things to Do Around the City

The Dalton Defenders Museum honors the brave citizens who stood up against the Dalton Gang. Four citizens died in the process. The museum tells the story not only of the robbery and the raid, but also Coffeyville’s early history. From the museum, visit the Dalton Defenders Plaza and Death Alley where markers show the path taken by the gang on the day of the robbery, as well as the locations where the four Coffeyville heroes were killed. 

Most visitors are immediately attracted to William Pitzer Brown’s mansion, which stands atop a hill. The Brown Mansion, completed in 1906, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Brown and his family moved to Coffeyville in 1890. He founded the Coffeyville Mining and Gas Company and owned other businesses in the area.

In Coffeyville, summers are hot and muggy while winters are cold and windy. The city gets an average of 44 inches of rain per year versus the national average of 38 inches. It doesn’t get as much snow – only 12 inches annually on average compared with the U.S. average of 28 inches. Coffeyville and all of Kansas are part of the Tornado Alley, which also includes Oklahoma, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, and Texas.
