The name was changed to George Town in 1790 in honor of President George Washington. Craig is credited with establishing the first saw, grist, and paper mills in Kentucky. He also invented bourbon whiskey in downtown Georgetown in 1789.

Georgetown College (1,608 students) is a private, four-year liberal arts college. It offers 35 undergraduate degrees concentrated into 31 majors. The Christian college was founded in 1829. Georgetown’s 15 public schools (8,906 students) boast of an average math proficiency score of 48% versus the state’s public school average of 47% and a reading proficiency score of 59% compared with the Kentucky average of 56%.
