Local History

Joplin was established in 1873, and named after the Rev. Harris G. Joplin, founder of the region's first Methodist congregation. The local economy has traditionally relied on mining, but the industry faltered after World War II when zinc prices plummeted. Bonnie and Clyde spent several weeks in a garage apartment in Joplin in 1933. Police tried to catch them during a robbery spree, but they escaped, and killed two officers in the process. They left some of their possessions behind, including a camera containing the duo’s photos that became famous upon publication. 

Weather and Climate

Although Joplin is located outside the Tornado Alley, it’s been struck by devastating twisters. On May 22, 2011, an EF5 tornado resulted in 158 deaths and injured over 1,000 people in the Joplin area. The tornado brought wind damage and flash flooding across southwest Missouri. It was one of the deadliest tornadoes in U.S. history.

The Everett J. Ritchie Tri-State Mineral Museum showcases the importance of mining to the area. It features an extensive mineral collection, tools used by early miners, and a fully functioning model of a mine. The Wildcat Glades Conservation and Audubon Center is located in Wildcat Park. The center has a 1,300-gallon aquarium and Ozark stream, home to aquatic organisms such as rainbow darters and stone rollers. While you’re in the park, take a walk on a popular loop trail.
