The Fort Dobbs Historic Site is a reconstruction of the only permanent frontier fort in North Carolina. The original fort, built in 1755, defended British North America’s western frontier during the French and Indian War (1754-1763). The site includes a nature trail, a covered shelter with picnic tables, and a playground. Enjoy a leisurely and scenic walk at the Statesville Greenway portion of the Carolina Thread Trail. It offers more than two miles of path that follows the Fourth Creek. The Carolina Thread Trail is a regional network of connected greenways and water trails covering 15 counties and two states.

Local History

Statesville was founded in January 1789. It was initially known as the Fourth Creek Settlement. Nobody knows for sure how the city got its name, although it might have stemmed from “the states vil” (vil referring to village or township). In 1801, the U.S. Post Office officially designated the name Statesville. The city was incorporated in 1847.

Weather and Climate

Although Hurricane Hugo made landfall in South Carolina, it impacted nine counties in North Carolina. It struck Iredell County and Statesville on Sept. 22, 1989. The hurricane brought winds of up to 160 miles per hour and caused $1 billion in damages and seven deaths in North Carolina alone.
