Local History

The Seneca tribe of the Iroquois Confederacy were the area’s original inhabitants. In 1814, a town called Smallwood was divided into two. William Billinghurst named a part of it Brighton for his hometown in England. The other part was called Pittsford. As the nearby village of Rochesterville expanded, it annexed parts of Brighton several times. Soon the village grew to become the city of Rochester. From the late 19th century to the early 20th century, the influx of immigrants to Rochester transformed Brighton's farms into suburban housing.

Weather and Climate

Brighton and the rest of Monroe County often turn into a winter wonderland during the cold season. The town receives 83 inches of snow annually, higher than the national average of 28 inches, and only 165 sunny days per year compared with the U.S. average of 205 sunny days. In addition to a white Christmas, it’s common to have a white Valentine’s Day as well in Brighton, such as on Feb. 14, 2007, when about 18 inches of snow fell in the area.

The market is held outdoors between May and November and indoors the rest of the year. When it comes to shopping malls, there are several choices near Brighton: Marketplace Mall in Rochester, Eastview Mall in Victor, and Pittsford Plaza in Pittsford. The Premium Outlets in Waterloo, New York, is farther, but the mall’s 100 stores are worth a special shopping excursion.
