How Did Orangeburg, SC Get its Name?

Orangeburg was named in honor of William IV, the Prince of Orange and son-in-law of King George II of England. George Sterling first settled in the area in 1704 to trade with Native Americans. In 1735, about 200 Swiss, German, and Dutch immigrants formed a colony in the area. Orangeburg was incorporated as a city in 1883. It became a community of small farmers.
