The James K. Polk Presidential Home and Museum features artifacts and exhibits about the 11th U.S. president. Samuel Polk, James’s father, built the house in 1816. Upon college graduation in 1818, James lived in the house and stayed there until his marriage. He launched his political career while he lived in Columbia, and served in the Tennessee legislature before becoming president. Take a leisurely drive on the Old Tennessee Trail, a scenic, 84-mile loop through small towns. Visit historical landmarks along the trail, including sites in Franklin, Columbia, and Spring Hill.

Local History

The federal government opened the area to settlement after signing a treaty with the Cherokee Indians in 1805. Columbia was chartered in November 1807. It thrived as an agricultural community. The discovery of phosphate in 1888 spurred economic growth. The city gained notoriety for a race riot in February 1946. A Black woman and her son, a World War II veteran, were arrested after an argument with a white store clerk. The incident fueled tense racial relations, especially among military veterans, and erupted in violence.

Local Culture

There are more pre-Civil War houses in Columbia than any other place in Tennessee, making it a popular heritage tourist destination. The city is known as home to the headquarters for the Sons of Confederate Veterans, a nonprofit organization. Up to 200,000 people attend the Mule Day celebration every spring. Festivalgoers ride their mules during the weekend event, which also features traditional Appalachian food, music, and crafts.
