Schools and Education

Texas A&M (68,679 students), inaugurated in 1876, was the state's first public institution of higher learning. The university offers 133 undergraduate programs, 175 master's degree programs, and 92 doctoral degree programs. The university’s Division of Research covers a broad scope of studies with funding from federal agencies such as the National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, and Department of Defense. College Station’s 20 public schools (13,570 students) boast of an average math proficiency score of 60% compared with the Texas public school average of 48% and a reading proficiency score of 55% versus the 45% state average.

Local History

The city grew out of Texas A&M College. The area’s isolation prompted school administrators to provide facilities for those who worked or studied at the college. In 1877, the U.S. Postal Service designated the community as College Station, Texas, derived from the train station located to the west of the campus. Residents voted to incorporate College Station as a city in 1938. 

Sports and Recreation

The Texas A&M Aggies are part of the Southeastern Conference (SEC), competing at the NCAA Division 1-A level in 20 varsity sports. The football team has won three national championships in 1919, 1927, and 1939. The team plays its home games at Kyle Field. The Aggies baseball team has been a member of three conferences: Southwest Conference until 1996, the Big 12 from 1997-2012, and the SEC since 2013. The Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park is the team’s home. In all, the team has won 24 conference championships.

Residents fondly call their hometown CStat, (population: 117,911), which is part of Brazos County. As can be expected, community life revolves around Texas A&M. The city is distinctly suburban, without a traditional downtown. However, nearby Bryan’s downtown has excellent amenities, from locally-owned restaurants and shops to art galleries and boutiques. The majority of College Station residents (62%) are renters. When it comes to public schools, College Station has the best schools in Brazos County.
