Lubbock is a city in northwestern Texas. Rock and roll fans throughout the world know it as the birthplace of the legendary musician Buddy Holly. 

Weather and Climate 

Lubbock’s semiarid climate brings 264 sunny days and only seven inches of snow per year. The city gets 20 inches of rain annually versus the U.S. average of 38 inches. As part of the Tornado Alley, Texas gets a fair number of tornadoes. One of the worst tornadoes to hit Lubbock happened on May 11, 1970. The F5 tornado killed 26 people and destroyed over 1,000 homes. Total damage was estimated at $125 million.

Local Culture 

Lubbock’s most famous native son, Buddy Holly, was a singer and songwriter whose music celebrated the spirit of West Texas. Holly and his band got their start playing country and western songs on a Lubbock radio station. He was known for hits such as “Peggy Sue” and “That'll Be the Day.” He died in a plane crash in 1959 when he was just 22. Lubbock keeps his legacy through the Buddy Holly Center, which owns an extensive collection of the musician’s memorabilia and showcases West Texas music.

Texas Tech, founded in 1923, is made up of 12 colleges offering more than 150 undergraduate degrees, 100 graduate degrees, and 50 doctoral degrees. The Lubbock Independent School District operates 51 public schools with 27,998 students. Wilson Elementary School and Hutchinson Middle School are among the city’s highly ranked schools.
