How Did San Angelo, TX Get Its Name?

Shortly after Fort Concho was built in the area in 1867, Bartholomew J. DeWitt established a trading post across the Concho River from the fort. He called it Santa Angela after his deceased wife Carolina Angela. By 1883, the area’s name had changed to San Angela. However, the name was rejected when the town applied for a post office because it was ungrammatical. The name should be either Santa Angela or San Angelo. The latter was chosen.
