The Local History

The Texas Legislature established Smith County and Tyler, the county seat, on April 11, 1846. Tyler got its name from President John Tyler, who served as the tenth U.S. president from 1841 to 1845. Tyler thrived as a farming community and became a city in 1907. When a blight decimated much of the fruit industry, local farmers switched to growing roses. Their success led to the creation of the popular Texas Rose Festival, an annual parade featuring more than 100 floats and entries. 

Things to Do in Tyler, TX

Visit the Tyler Municipal Rose Garden to see the reason behind the city’s nickname. The garden is a sprawling 14-acre landscape displaying more than 32,000 rose bushes and over 600 different varieties. It also has reflecting pools, walkways, and fountains. Take the entire family to the Center for Earth and Space Science Education (CESSE) Planetarium. A major renovation has added a state-of-the-art digital projection system, a 40-foot diameter theater, new exhibit space, extra classroom and instructional space, and outdoor educational plazas.

One of the things that make Tyler (population: 106,985) attractive is its reasonable cost of living, which is 3.7% lower than the national average. Likewise, food and housing costs are 2.5% and 34.2% lower than the national average, respectively. Need more incentives? Texas doesn’t impose income taxes. It’s one of only seven states in the country with no income taxes. Texas levies a 6.25% to 8.25% sales tax. Tyler’s median gross rent is $887 while the median rent for a two-bedroom apartment is $1,202.

Know Your Neighborhoods

Locals love their city’s small-town vibe combined with big-city amenities plus easy access to major cities such as Dallas, Houston, and Austin. Almost half of Tyler residents are renters. Suburbanites are drawn to Whitehouse and Bullard for their proximity to Tyler and excellent schools. Residents praise Whitehouse for its active community life while Bullard gets kudos for overall safety and friendliness. 

Shopping in Town

Tyler is the biggest shopping destination between Dallas and Shreveport. You’ll find the best shops along South Broadway Avenue. It’s also where you’ll find the Village at Cumberland Park (a 700,000 square-foot shopping center) and Broadway Square Mall, with dozens of stores and restaurants. Bergfeld Center, which opened in 1949 as Tyler’s first shopping center, is located along the same corridor.
