The settlement of Statesville was established in 1789, with only 95 inhabitants. After the construction of the railroad, the population began to grow rapidly. By the turn of the century, the top industries in Statesville were based on herbs, tobacco, and liquor. The Wallace Herbarium was one of the largest herbal companies in the world. Many buildings in the downtown area were constructed off of the profits from the liquor industries.

The Local Sports Scene 

Previously home to the Statesville Owls, a minor league baseball team from 1939 until 1969, there is no minor league currently in the city. The Statesville Senior High Stadium, used by the Statesville Owls, is now used by the high school's baseball team. There is currently a summer league collegiate baseball team that plays in the Southern Collegiate Baseball League and still goes by the name of the Statesville Owls. Some notable athletes from Statesville are Gair Allie (MLB), Breon Borders (NFL), and Jared Watts (MLS).
